EU announces €63 million humanitarian funding package for Somalia

Brussels, Belgium. The European Union announced €63 million in humanitarian funding for Somalia on Thursday as the country faces an intensifying crisis driven by conflict and drought.

Funding package and priorities

The EU said the aid package will prioritise life-saving health and nutrition services. The bloc did not specify a timeline for delivery.

Total assistance since 2017

The EU said the new funding brings its total humanitarian assistance to Somalia to more than €750 million since 2017.

UN warning on food assistance

The announcement follows a warning from the United Nations World Food Programme in early February that its food and nutrition assistance in Somalia could run out by April without fresh funding.

Security and climate pressures

Somalia has been destabilised by sustained fighting between government forces and al-Shabaab militants, worsening the impact of recurring droughts on one of the world’s most vulnerable populations.

How do you think the new EU funding will affect access to health and nutrition services in Somalia?
