EU rail travel reached 8.7 billion trips and 444.5 billion passenger-kilometres, Eurostat says

Brussels, Belgium. People in the European Union took 8.7 billion rail trips throughout the previous year, according to a report from Eurostat. The travel totaled 444.5 billion passenger-kilometres across member states.


Total rail performance and leading countries

Germany and France were the largest contributors to the overall performance of the EU rail network. Germany recorded 109.1 billion passenger-kilometres, while France recorded 107.3 billion passenger-kilometres.

Other major and smaller contributors

Italy ranked third with 55.9 billion passenger-kilometres. Six member states recorded less than 1 billion passenger-kilometres during the same period: Lithuania and Estonia at 0.4 billion each, Luxembourg at 0.6 billion, Latvia and Greece at 0.7 billion each, and Slovenia at 0.9 billion.

Per-capita passenger levels

Measured relative to population, Luxembourg had the highest ratio of passengers per capita at 46.2.
