EU renewable energy in transport rises in 2024 as Cyprus posts slight decline

Brussels, Belgium. Renewable energy use in transport across the European Union rose slightly in 2024, while Cyprus recorded a small decline, according to Eurostat data released on Wednesday. The EU remains below its 2030 target for renewable energy in transport.

EU-wide trend and 2030 target

Renewable energy in transport at EU level reached 11.2% in 2024, a 0.2 percentage point increase from 2023. The share has risen from 1.4% in 2004, when the time series began.
Despite the increase, the EU is 17.8 percentage points below the 29% target for 2030 on the use of renewable energy sources in transport.

Cyprus records a slight decline

In Cyprus, the share of energy from renewable sources in transport was 7.192% in 2024, down from 7.285% in 2023. This represents a year-on-year decrease of 0.1 percentage points, placing Cyprus among seven EU member states that recorded a decline between 2023 and 2024.

Longer-term picture in Cyprus

Eurostat data show Cyprus’s share of renewable energy use in transport was 2.68% in 2014. Over a decade, this amounts to an increase of more than 4.5 percentage points, although the most recent year showed slightly reduced momentum.

Differences among member states

Greece also recorded a decrease of 0.1 percentage points in 2024, while Slovenia reported the largest fall at 0.8 percentage points. In contrast, 19 EU countries increased their use of renewable energy in transport during the same period.
Latvia recorded the largest increase at 7.4 percentage points, followed by the Netherlands at 6.2 percentage points.
