Brussels, Belgium. The European Union recorded a record-high share of renewable energy used for heating and cooling in 2024, with the total reaching 26.7%, according to Eurostat. Cyprus registered 41.591% in 2024, down slightly from 2023.
EU reaches highest level since 2004
Eurostat said the 26.7% share in 2024 was the highest recorded since the time series began in 2004, when the share stood at 11.7%. The 2024 result marked an increase of 0.5 percentage points from 26.2% in 2023, but remained below the average annual increase of 0.75 percentage points observed between 2004 and 2024.
Cyprus records slight decline from 2023 peak
In Cyprus, the renewable energy share for heating and cooling was 41.591% in 2024. This was a slight decrease compared with 2023, when Cyprus reached an all-time high of 42.896%. Eurostat reported Cyprus at 41.560% in 2022, while noting that the island started from 9.264% on January 1, 2004.
Drivers and EU directive
Eurostat attributed the steady rise in the gross final consumption of renewable energy primarily to the contribution of biomass and the growing use of heat pumps. It also noted that EU Directive 2023/2413, adopted on October 18, 2023, mandates that every member state must push these figures higher.
