Famagusta EOA seeks government answers on Paralimni and Protaras flood and water supply projects

Famagusta, Cyprus. The Famagusta district self-government organisation (EOA) said it is awaiting answers from the government regarding two major water-related projects, its president Yiannis Karousos told the Cyprus News Agency.

Projects and costs

The projects include flood protection works in Paralimni and Protaras with a total cost of about €15 million, and the replacement of the Kokkinokremmos pipeline, costing €2.5 million, also linked to flood protection in Paralimni.

Karousos said the project is important and necessary and noted it was first promoted by the late mayor Theodoros Pyrillis.

Pipeline aims

The planned construction of a water pipeline from the Dhekelia desalination plant to the Kokkinokremmos hill aims to meet water supply needs and improve the reliability of the drinking water supply system in the affected areas.

Funding confirmation and delays

Karousos said almost a year has passed since announcements by President Nikos Christodoulides, but the EOA has not been informed in writing whether funds have been included in the state’s supplementary budget to allow the project to proceed.

He said repeated communications have not resulted in written confirmation on funding, contributing to delays. The EOA said the delays are concerning because the projects address urgent issues, including flood risks and water shortages.
