San Jose, United States. A gunman opened fire at San Pedro Square in San Jose, California, on Sunday, killing one person and leaving another with life-threatening injuries, police said. The venue is one of several World Cup fan zone sites in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Police response

San Jose police said in a post on X that one victim was pronounced dead at the scene and a second victim was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. Police said the incident is being investigated as a homicide and that several surrounding streets were closed.

Timing of the shooting

The shooting took place at San Pedro Square, where large crowds have gathered to watch World Cup matches on big screens. No match was being shown at the time, and the only game of the day had ended around 2 p.m. local time.

Scene at San Pedro Square

A Reuters journalist at the scene observed a heavy police presence, multiple police vehicles, and a person on a stretcher partially covered by a white sheet being rushed from the area by uniformed personnel. The area was cordoned off and most nearby bars were closed.

Witness account

A security guard who declined to be named because she was not authorised to speak to the media said she saw the injured person in distress. She said the person was moaning and groaning and that there was blood around his neck and upper back. She also said police were speaking to security staff and a couple of witnesses.

Fan zone venue

San Pedro Square is one of several dozen fan zones operating across the Bay Area, which has hosted five World Cup matches so far. The last of those was a knockout game on Wednesday between Bosnia and co-hosts the United States.
