Limassol, Cyprus. Cesspit sewage currently sent to the overburdened water recycling treatment plant in Moni could be handled by the Vati plant as early as September, while Vati’s upgrade is expected to be completed before the end of the year.

The Water Development Department will meet the Vati contractor next week to discuss measures aimed at relieving pressure on the Moni facility, which is operated by the Limassol district self-government organisation (EOA).

Upgrade works at Vati

Water Development Department deputy first officer Michalis Michail said the department and the Limassol EOA were in constant contact and cooperation to address problems.

The Vati plant is operated by the department and has been undergoing upgrade and operational works by a contractor since February under a five-year agreement, he said.

The works include improvements, new equipment and maintenance. Michail said the plant must operate at a reduced capacity while the upgrade is carried out, although it will not cease operations.

Arrangement with the EOA

An agreement with the EOA, implemented from March 2026, allows specified quantities of cesspit sewage to be received through a manhole on the network just before the Moni plant.

The amount deposited is limited to 150 cubic metres per day, compared with the 30,000 cubic metres handled by the Moni plant.

Michail said the arrangement allows the contractor to continue upgrading and operating Vati without sending cesspit sewage to the EOA.

Concerns over waste disposal

In addition to cesspit cleaning trucks from Vati offloading into a nearby manhole, industrial waste is suspected of being dumped into one of about 20,000 manholes in the district.

This is affecting the quality of recycled water produced by the Moni plant.
