Limassol, Cyprus. The father of 32-year-old Alexandros Sophocleous, who has been missing from his home since Monday, has alleged that a criminal court judge prevented his son from entering a rehabilitation programme before his disappearance.
Police are continuing efforts to locate Sophocleous and have appealed to the public for information.
Father’s allegations
In a letter sent to Sigma on Wednesday, Sophocleous’ father said he had appealed to Attorney General George Savvides in November 2025, seeking intervention in his son’s case, but alleged that no action was taken.
He said a further letter, accompanied by legal and medical documents, was recently submitted to Savvides and Deputy Attorney General Savvas Angelides by a family friend.
Planned rehabilitation
According to the father, Sophocleous had agreed to enter the Ayia Skepi rehabilitation clinic after the conclusion of criminal proceedings before the Limassol criminal court scheduled for Thursday.
He said psychiatrists, psychologists, staff at Athalassa hospital and workers from Ayia Skepi had worked with the family to persuade the 32-year-old to begin treatment. The rehabilitation centre had already accepted his admission, he said.
“Alexander was ready to go for rehab and treatment,” the father said in the letter.
He alleged that the judge explicitly prohibited Sophocleous from going to Ayia Skepi, and questioned the basis for preventing a mentally ill person from receiving treatment.
Documents submitted
The family said the material submitted to the Legal Service described a history of mental health difficulties, repeated hospital admissions and substance dependency.
They urged authorities to consider possible legal intervention to support Sophocleous’ rehabilitation.
