Nicosia, Cyprus. A father of a young child treated at Makarios hospital raised concerns on Sigma’s ‘Mesimeri kai Kati’ show about staff shortages and said his daughter has yet to receive a clear diagnosis after a month in hospital.
Father’s complaint
Speaking on the programme, the father said shortages in medical personnel and unreplaced doctors on leave are compromising his daughter’s care. He also requested that she be transferred to Greece.
Okypy response
In response, the state health services (Okypy) said in a statement that Makarios hospital provides all necessary medical support across the required specialties.
Okypy said the child has been hospitalised for four weeks in the hospital’s paediatric clinic and that her acute symptoms have been addressed.
Okypy said treating physicians report she is receiving all necessary medical care, and that all required specialised tests have been scheduled for the coming week.
What steps do you think should be taken to address concerns about staffing and patient care at hospitals?
