Astromeritis, Cyprus. A fire safety training programme for primary and secondary schools was launched at Astromeritis primary school on Monday, with Education Minister Athena Michaelidou saying safety must be central to education. Officials said the initiative aims to strengthen prevention, responsibility and emergency awareness among pupils.
Officials stress prevention and cooperation
Michaelidou said there is a need to build a culture of prevention and self-protection from a young age. She highlighted the importance of cooperation among state services, schools and voluntary groups.
Programme expands to pupils
Fire chief Nikos Longinos said the scheme builds on previous teacher training in Cyprus and now targets pupils. He said it seeks to improve fire prevention and response skills through modern teaching methods and practical activities.
Support from Bank of Cyprus volunteers
The programme is backed by the Bank of Cyprus’ SupportCY volunteers. Elli Ioannidou said it is important to invest in prevention and children’s education, particularly as fire risks rise because of climate change.
She said continued support would be provided through school visits, educational sessions and fire prevention patrols in rural areas.
School event includes demonstrations
Cyprus Retired Firefighters’ Organisation president Panikos Tsouderos, community leader Aris Constantinou, and school head Demetris Nicolaou also spoke at the event, emphasising the need for cooperation for school safety.
Students from kindergarten and primary school took part in interactive sessions in which fire service members and SupportCY volunteers demonstrated equipment and fire engines, giving pupils hands-on fire safety experience.
