Nicosia, Cyprus. Transport Minister Alexis Vafeades said the first phase of the Limnes migrant centre has been completed following a site visit on Friday. He said the facility will become operational immediately with limited capacity.
Project scope and timeline
Vafeades said the Limnes centre and its supporting infrastructure form a key part of the state’s migration management framework. He said the project is intended to support the country’s efforts to manage migration in a practical way.
He described the project as one of the largest public works currently underway in Cyprus, with a total cost of about €85 million. He said construction began in August 2023 and has progressed according to the revised timetable.
Vafeades said the second phase is expected to be completed in April, with the final phase scheduled for September.
Delivery and operations
Vafeades credited the department of public works for delivering the first phase on time, citing coordination with state services and the local community. He said the achievement required close cooperation and that work is continuing so the project can be delivered fully.
He said the first phase will become operational immediately, with limited capacity. He said the structure is being staffed, there is an administrative framework, and there is a small number of residents, adding that capacity would increase significantly once the second and third phases are completed.
