Foot and mouth disease cases rise to 44 after two new farm incidents in Larnaca district

Larnaca, Cyprus. Two more incidents of foot and mouth disease were identified at farms in the Larnaca district on Saturday, the veterinary services department said. All animals on both farms will be culled.

New incidents in Dromolaxia and Meneou

One incident was identified on a farm housing 16 sheep and goats in the village of Dromolaxia. The other was identified on a farm housing 193 cows in nearby Meneou.

Total incidents reach 44

The number of incidents identified since the outbreak has risen to 44. The department said an “incident” is considered to be one farm, because upon detection of one positive case at a farming unit, every animal on the unit must be slaughtered.

Vaccination and culling update

The department said 89 per cent of cattle units and 65 per cent of sheep and goat units across the island have been vaccinated. Culling is also ongoing, with around 21,000 sheep and goats having been slaughtered so far.

How do you think the outbreak response should balance vaccination and culling measures?
