Foot-and-mouth disease spreads in Dromolaxia, prompting expanded measures in Larnaca district

Dromolaxia, Cyprus. Foot-and-mouth disease has spread in Dromolaxia, extending the virus outside the initial 10km containment zone, which authorities described as expected. The Veterinary Services said the spread has increased the number of animals earmarked for culling to around 20,500 across 23 infected units.

Containment and vaccination measures

Veterinary Services spokeswoman Soteria Georgiades said cases are anticipated at both 3km and 10km, reflecting the virus’ typical progression. According to Politis, she said the virus remains confined to the Larnaca district, and containment efforts are being enforced through strict prohibitions and penalties for illegal movements.

Vaccinations for sheep and goats within the initial 10km zone are set to conclude on Friday, but the case in Dromolaxia has required a slight expansion of the vaccination zone. Officials have prepared a comprehensive vaccination plan that could extend across Cyprus if needed.

European Commission discussions on culling

In a videoconference with the European Commission, Cypriot authorities asked whether only virus-positive animals could be culled from infected herds. Georgiades said the commission mandated total slaughter of infected herds without exceptions, and Veterinary Services confirmed discussions would continue to seek alternative measures.

Concerns over burial methods

Environmental groups raised concerns about burial methods, releasing photographs showing animals submerged in water in trenches.

How do you think authorities should balance disease control measures with concerns about disposal methods?
