Foot-and-mouth disease standoff at Larnaca livestock unit after farmer refuses slaughter

Larnaca, Cyprus. Veterinary officers discovered about 50 animals at a livestock unit in Larnaca, where a farmer refused to allow their slaughter, resulting in a standoff on Saturday.

Veterinary services said several animals at the farm had died from foot-and-mouth disease.

Farmer refusal and police response

The farmer declined to permit veterinary officers to proceed with slaughter. Police officers were dispatched to the scene and were set to remain as long as tensions ran high.
