Foot-and-mouth outbreak reaches critical stage as Cyprus nears Easter

Nicosia, Cyprus. Cyprus’s foot-and-mouth outbreak is at a critical juncture with Easter two weeks away, according to the veterinary association and farmers. Culling has finished at farms where cases were found and vaccination efforts are nearing completion in their first phase.

Vaccination and containment measures

The first phase of vaccinations across the island is almost complete, while a second phase is already underway in Larnaca, including second doses for sheep and goats, according to Cyprus Veterinary Association head Demetris Epaminondas.

Swine vaccinations in containment areas were expected to begin in the coming days, with vaccines due to arrive by Tuesday. Once completed, vaccinations of pigs would continue across the island.

“It will take a long time before we can say that we have placed the crisis under control,” Epaminondas said.

Livestock movement and abattoir preparations

Farmers were urged to be extremely careful when moving livestock for slaughter ahead of Easter, with the state preparing heightened safety measures at abattoirs.

Feed shortages and ongoing monitoring

Farmers are also facing dwindling animal feed stocks after relying on reserves to feed livestock that would otherwise be out grazing due to culling and restrictions.

Epaminondas said there had so far been no reports of the disease in Limassol or Paphos, adding that results from Famagusta district were still pending.

Biosafety measures

Epaminondas said it was important for farmers to implement biosafety measures, particularly regarding the movement of people, milk, and animal feed.

The company collecting dead animals was also implementing strict biosafety measures under the supervision of the Veterinary Services.
