Forest firefighters cancel 48-hour strike after agreement on service plan terms

Nicosia, Cyprus. Forest firefighters on Monday called a 48-hour strike and cancelled it a little over an hour later after an agreement was reached on the full application of the service plan’s terms.

Strike announced

Trade unions Oekdy-Sek, Pasykek-Peo and Dee-Kdoko-Deok said violations of the forestry department’s service plan greatly reduced forest firefighters’ readiness to respond at short notice and created serious risks for their safety.

They said the agreed measures had been implemented at the start of last year’s forest firefighting season, but that the forestry department had decided not to implement them this year.

The unions added that letters had been sent and meetings held in an effort to resolve the issue.

Strike cancelled

A little over an hour after the strike announcement, Oekdy-Sek said an agreement had been reached for the service plan’s terms to be applied in full and that the strike had been cancelled.

The union said a dialogue would be held in October to resolve any other issues that had arisen.
