Funeral held for Cypriot chef Andreas Mavrommatis in Agios Ioannis Pitsilias

Agios Ioannis Pitsilias, Cyprus. The funeral of acclaimed Cypriot chef Andreas Mavrommatis took place on Sunday, attended by family, friends and admirers. He died suddenly last Saturday at the age of 69.


Service and attendees

The service was held at the Church of Archangel Michael and was led by Archbishop Georgios of Cyprus. The government was represented by Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos, while former president Nicos Anastasiades also attended.

Tributes from officials

In his address, Kombos described Mavrommatis as a rare individual whose talent, humility and hard work earned him international recognition, and said France had embraced his culinary achievements rooted in Cypriot heritage.

Anastasiades paid tribute to a “distinguished chef and remarkable Cypriot,” highlighting his contribution to promoting Cyprus abroad and recalling that he was awarded the Medal of Outstanding Contribution to the Republic in 2018.

Final farewell

Mavrommatis was also honoured by local officials, relatives and friends, with messages read on behalf of religious figures, marking a final farewell to a chef widely regarded as an ambassador of Cypriot culture overseas.
