Game service probes suspected illegal hare hunting in buffer zone near Mammari and Denia

Nicosia, Cyprus. Game service officers launched an operation on Thursday evening following reports of gunfire and suspected illegal hare hunting in the buffer zone between Mammari and Denia. Authorities said four freshly killed hares were later found hidden in nylon bags.

Operation launched after tip-off

According to a press release issued on Friday, the game service mobilised two patrols shortly after 6pm after receiving information that individuals on motorcycles were hunting hares in the area.

Suspects evaded interception

Officers located two vehicles and attempted a coordinated stop, but the suspects escaped. The game service said the open, muddy terrain hindered interception.

During the pursuit, one motorcycle fled in an unknown direction, while the second headed towards the north.

Hares recovered and investigation continues

By tracking the suspects’ movements, officers identified a location within the buffer zone where the hunted game had been concealed. A subsequent search led to the discovery of four freshly killed hares hidden inside nylon bags.

Search operations continued the following morning in an effort to recover further evidence and identify those responsible. The game service said the investigation remains ongoing.
