Nicosia, Cyprus. The defence attorney for German real estate agent Eva Isabella Kunzel argued in court on Monday that much of the prosecution’s case is circumstantial in a trial over alleged illegal trading in Greek Cypriot-owned properties in the north.
Kunzel’s case continued at Nicosia criminal court, where she has been held in pre-trial detention since her arrest in early July 2024.
Arrest and prosecution claims
Kunzel was arrested and had her luggage searched at Larnaca airport in early July 2024 after a conversation aboard a flight with Elam MEP Geadis Geadi.
Prosecutors say Kunzel admitted during that conversation to selling Greek Cypriot-owned property in the north.
Cybercrime unit witnesses testify
The prosecution called two police officers who worked with the cybercrime unit to testify on Monday.
The first witness, Constantina Parpa, read from a report she compiled based on online information from the website of a German company. The website identifies Kunzel as the company’s CEO and founder and includes information about tourist resorts and housing complexes in the north.
During cross-examination, defence lawyer Sotiris Argyrou asked whether Parpa used a certified translator to translate German into English. Parpa said she used Google Translate.
Asked whether she was certain the defendant personally posted the information on the website, Parpa said she found the information on the website in question.
What do you think is the key issue the court will focus on when assessing the online evidence presented?
