Germany reaffirms support for Cyprus after talks with Greek foreign minister in Berlin

Berlin, Germany. German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul reaffirmed Germany’s commitment to Cyprus on Tuesday after talks in Berlin with Greek Foreign Minister Constantinos Gerapetritis. Wadephul said Germany would provide political and military support if needed.

German commitment and support pledge

Wadephul said Germany would act if Cyprus requires support. “If both military and political support is needed, Germany will do so. We stand by Cyprus. That is not in doubt,” he said.

He added that discussions with Cypriot officials confirmed there is no immediate need for additional assistance, but pledged rapid support if circumstances change. “If Cyprus needs us, we will be there immediately. They can rely on us. Europe is united on this issue,” he said.

Greek comments on EU security and regional solidarity

Gerapetritis said the security of the European Union is closely linked to developments in the Middle East. He said support for Cyprus includes defence assistance and added that Greece expresses solidarity with allied Gulf countries that have been attacked “without reason.”

Germany’s regional role and deployments

Wadephul recalled his recent visit to Cyprus and referred to Germany’s regional responsibilities, including contributions to the UN interim force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) and NATO. He said a German frigate is operating in the region on issues related to Lebanon, and that German naval forces have a strong presence in the North Atlantic, while Germany also has a division in the Baltic countries.

NATO membership question and naval presence near Cyprus

Asked about Cyprus potentially seeking NATO membership, Wadephul did not give a direct response, while Gerapetritis said Greece will support any choices made by the island.

The statements came amid a growing European naval armada around Cyprus following recent Iranian drone attacks, including deployments by Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Greece, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom.

What do you think the renewed pledges of support mean for Cyprus’s security priorities?
