Limassol, Cyprus. The redevelopment of Heroes Square and surrounding streets is expected to be completed by June 15, about a month later than originally planned, according to Limassol Mayor Yiannis Armeftis.
Revised completion timeline
Armeftis, speaking to Entrepreneurial Limassol, a periodical published by the Limassol Chamber of Commerce (Evel), said the project had initially been scheduled for delivery in early May but is now expected to be completed in June, with a target date of June 15.
Changes to the square’s layout
Armeftis said the main difference in the new layout of the historic square in central Limassol is the removal of the stairs, creating a single unified surface.
He said the road in front of the Rialto Theatre is currently being completed, and that the new design has improved the connection between the theatre’s stairs and the square.
Kiosk reconstruction and remaining works
Armeftis said the square’s kiosks, which had previously fallen into deterioration, are being reconstructed. Because the kiosks are listed buildings, the municipality worked with the relevant department and decided to rebuild them, which contributed to the project delay.
He added that the works are expected to be completed soon, while the stormwater retention tank being built in the southern part of the square is still pending completion.
Potential extension toward the Church of the Holy Trinity
The wider redevelopment may be extended toward the Church of the Holy Trinity following a Municipal Council decision to include the square area west of the church.
Armeftis said efforts had been made to reach an agreement with the Ecclesiastical Committee and the Metropolis of Limassol to move the church fence eastwards, which would allow the square to be expanded and double the available public space, but no agreement has been reached so far.
