Hourly paid government employees begin 24-hour strike over pay and working conditions

Nicosia, Cyprus. Hourly paid government employees began a 24-hour strike at midnight, seeking pay rises and improved employment conditions as part of negotiations to renew their 2025-2027 collective agreement. The action is expected to affect several state services, including health services and lifeguards.


Strike demands

The strike was organised by trade unions SEK, PEO and Deok. The unions are demanding that salary increases be paid retrospectively from January 1, 2025.

Duration and protest plans

The strike will end on Wednesday at midnight. It will be accompanied by a protest rally and march in Nicosia.

Demonstration route

The protest is scheduled to begin at 10am outside the finance ministry in Nicosia, before participants march towards the presidential palace. Demonstrations are expected to affect central Nicosia routes near the finance ministry and the presidential palace.
