In 2017, 13 to 17 November, Russian Gastronomy Week will be held in Cyprus.

The concept of the Russian Gastronomy Week (RGW) project was commonly developed by International Centre of Wine and Gastronomy (ICWAG, Moscow, www.icwag.ru), a new member of the UN World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO), with active personal support of Taleb Rifai, UNWTO Secretary-General. The RGW project is implemented with the support of S.V. Lavrov, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation, Rossotrudnichestvo, the Federal Agency for Tourism (Rosturizm), the Civic Chamber of the Russian Federation, and leading professional associations and unions of Russia.

A large international project represents a cultural and educational platform that brings broad scope audience with a wide range of interests together. Russian Gastronomy Weeks are considered an effective tool for:

  • strengthening cultural and business relations between member countries;
  • promoting member countries as attractive tourist destinations;
  • demonstrating the country’s tourist attractions;
  • presenting national cuisine, regional foods and beverages to foreign audience;
  • drawing attention to regional investment projects in the hospitality industry;
  • increasing turnover among participating countries and promotion of food, beverage and service exports.

The first Russian Gastronomy Week was held in Madrid in 2015, and the second took place in Madrid and Barcelona in 2016. These weeks received praising feedback from Secretary-General of the UN World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) T. Rifai, Ambassador of Russia to Spain Y.P. Korchagin, as well as Russian and Spanish participants. The RGW events were widely covered in Russian and foreign media.

The third Russian Gastronomy Week will be held 13 to 17 of November 2017 in the cities of Nicosia and Limassol under the aegis of UNWTO supported by the Embassy of the Russian Federation in the Republic of Cyprus, the Russian Centre for Science and Culture in Nicosia, and the Cyprus Tourism Organisation (СТО).

The main venue for the Week’s events shall be the luxurious five-star Four Seasons Hotel Limassol (www.ru.fourseasons.com.cy), which has signed a formal cooperation agreement with ICWAG. Currently, the project’s partners are also TUI Russia Group (www.tui.ru), the Federation of Restaurateurs and Hoteliers of Russia (www.frio.ru), the Garment Factory PROFI DRESS (Samara, www.profidress.ru), the Vladimir Spivakov International Charity Foundation (www.spivakov.ru), and the Russian National Culinary Association (www.dreamchef.ru).

The official media partners of RGW 2017 are Cyprus Inform (www.kiprinform.com), Russian Radio Cyprus (www.rusradio.com.cy), and Interfax-Tourism (www.tourism.interfax.ru). RGW is also supported by Gastronom Publishing House (www.gastronom.ru), Premiere Magazine (Cyprus, www.premiere-magazine.com.cy), Yug Times Weekly (Krasnodar region, www.yugtimes.com), InfPol Publishing House (Ulan-Ude, www.infpol.ru).

The Week officially opens on 13 November with a ceremonial reception at the Russian Centre for Science and Culture in the Republic of Cyprus in Nicosia, with the participation of the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation in the Republic of Cyprus S.V. Osadchy, the enogastronomic part of which shall be prepared by the Russian RGW team.

Certain activities are planned as part of the Russian Gastronomy Week in Cyprus – gastronomic route show-cases, tourism exhibitions, and food and beverage producer expositions during which the exhibitors from the Vladimir region, Ulan-Ude, Yaroslavl and a number of other Russian regions will be presenting their products and services to Cypriot specialists and the general public.

Every evening, the Four Seasons Hotel Limassol’s restaurants will host themed dinners prepared by chefs de cuisine from Vladimir, Krasnodar, Moscow, Ulan-Ude and Yaroslavl. The RGW programme features master classes by leading Russian experts in the field of enogastronomy, such as the tasting of Russian vodkas and distillates (ICWAG President L.V. Gelibterman) and “Secrets of the Kremlin Cuisine” (FRaH President I.O. Bukharov), as well as the Russia-Cyprus Culinary Summit. A charity cooking class will be organised for the young Cypriots.

The Russian Gastronomy Week will close on 17 November with a gala dinner of Russian cuisine at the Four Seasons Hotel Limassol’s restaurant, where a team of chefs de cuisine led by A. Matyukha (winner of the Russian qualifying round for Bocuse d’Or in 2017) will demonstrate their own culinary masterpieces.
