Indian engineer dies after attack on Cyprus-flagged ship off Oman

Muscat, Oman. Indian engineer Heramb Karmarkar, who went missing after an attack on the Cyprus-flagged container ship GFS Galaxy off Oman, has died, his father-in-law said. Karmarkar was the second Indian seafarer reported killed in the region within three days.

Attack on GFS Galaxy

Karmarkar, 30, was an engineer aboard the GFS Galaxy when it came under attack off the coast of Oman on Sunday.

Cypriot authorities said the vessel, which had a crew of 24 including 11 Indian nationals, was struck by an unidentified projectile.

Iran said it targeted the ship after it attempted to pass through an unauthorised route despite warnings to change course.

Death confirmed by vessel manager

Karmarkar’s father-in-law, Vivek Tandon, told Reuters that the company managing the vessel informed him of the engineer’s death.

India’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs had not responded to a Reuters request for comment.

Second Indian seafarer killed

Another Indian seafarer was killed on Tuesday after two ships came under attack while passing through the Strait of Hormuz.

New Delhi lodged a strong protest with Iran and summoned the country’s deputy ambassador over that death.

Tehran says it has again closed the Strait of Hormuz after hostilities with Washington flared last week. US President Donald Trump said the waterway remained open to all commercial vessels except those belonging to Iran.
