Iran sets conditions for restarting ceasefire talks with United States

Tehran, Iran. Iran has set strict conditions for restarting ceasefire talks with the United States, according to people familiar with Tehran’s negotiating position. A US official called the demands “unrealistic,” diplomats said.

Iran’s stated demands

People familiar with Iran’s negotiating position said Tehran is demanding the closure of all US military bases in the Gulf and compensation for attacks carried out against it.

Iran is also seeking a new passage regime in the Strait of Hormuz that would allow it to collect fees from ships using the waterway.

Other demands include guarantees that the conflict will not be repeated, an end to Israeli attacks, full lifting of international sanctions and the right to keep Iran’s missile programme without restrictions.

Responses from US and diplomats

A US official described the demands as “unrealistic.” Iranian and American diplomats said the terms make a ceasefire agreement harder to reach.

What do you think these demands mean for the prospects of restarting ceasefire talks?
