Israeli airstrike kills two in southern Gaza tent camp, including six-year-old girl

Khan Younis, Gaza. An Israeli airstrike on a tent encampment for displaced families in the Mawasi area of southern Gaza killed two people, including a six-year-old girl, and wounded 17 others on Monday, Palestinian health officials said.

Details of the strike

Medics said the strike killed Mennatallah Abu Libda, 6, and Hanan Mahmoud, 31. Witnesses said the attack was carried out by two helicopters.

Military response and wider context

The Israeli military told Reuters it had struck militants in the area but did not provide further details.

The strike came as an October ceasefire brokered by U.S. President Donald Trump has failed to stop Israeli attacks in Gaza, with Israel and Hamas deadlocked in indirect talks over the second phase of the deal. That phase includes the militant group’s disarmament and Israeli army withdrawals.

The ceasefire left Israel in control of more than half of Gaza, while Hamas controls a narrow strip of territory along the coast.

Since the truce took effect, about 900 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli strikes, according to Gaza health officials, who do not distinguish between combatants and civilians. During the same period, four Israeli soldiers have been killed by militants, according to the Israeli military.

Hamas does not publish figures for its fighter casualties. Israel says its post-ceasefire strikes are aimed at preventing attacks or stopping people from approaching its armistice line with Hamas.
