Italy seizes over 10 million detonators and 314,000 rounds of ammunition at Ancona port

Ancona, Italy. Italian authorities seized more than 10 million detonators and 314,000 rounds of ammunition at the port of Ancona after discovering the cargo during checks on a truck preparing to board a passenger ferry bound for Greece and reportedly destined for Cyprus.

Seizure and investigation

The seizure was reported by ANSA (Agenzia Nazionale Stampa Associata), which said the operation was carried out by the Guardia di Finanza in cooperation with the Italian Customs and Monopolies Agency as part of an operation codenamed “Clean Shot”.

According to the report, the material belonged to two Italian companies and was officially declared as destined for Cyprus. It was being transported in a truck whose driver had provided false information when issuing the transport documentation.

Safety regulations and transport requirements

Authorities said transporting such cargo on a passenger vessel violates maritime safety regulations. They said that because of the quantity and nature of the explosive materials, specialised land routes and specific permits issued by the prefecture are required for their transport.

How the shipment was flagged

The seizure followed a preventive analysis of commercial flows that identified anomalies in the Italy–Greece route, leading investigators to inspect the shipment.

Potential risk and charges

Officials said the detonators, described as highly sensitive components capable of being triggered by impact or exposure to heat, could have caused catastrophic consequences if an incident had occurred aboard the ship.

The transporter has been reported to authorities on charges of illegal possession and transport of ammunition and explosive materials, as well as the use of false documents.

Role of the Guardia di Finanza

The Guardia di Finanza is a specialised Italian law enforcement body operating under the Ministry of Economy and Finance and is responsible for tackling financial crime, tax evasion, smuggling, money laundering and drug trafficking.

What measures do you think should be taken to prevent dangerous goods from being transported on passenger vessels?
