Keravnos says social support body received no cash donations amid video-linked criticism

Nicosia, Cyprus. Finance Minister Makis Keravnos said on Friday that the social support body at the centre of criticism linked to a widely shared video never received donations in cash. He said relevant authorities had found no cash deposits to the institution.

Authorities involved and findings

Keravnos told Ant1 television that the accountant-general, the auditor-general and the Central Bank were involved in examining the matter. He said he had spoken with them and was told that no cash was ever deposited.

Claims denied over alleged campaign finance violations

The video alleged that cash donations to the body, originally set up to offer financial assistance to disadvantaged students, were used to circumvent campaign finance laws and curry favour with the government. Keravnos rejected the allegation and said he believed President Nikos Christodoulides did no wrong regarding the social support body.

Comments on the president and government response

Keravnos said that while some people may disagree with Christodoulides’ policies or handling of issues, he saw no indication that anyone could accuse the president of bribery or similar actions. He said the government reacted immediately, citing resignations and removals, and said Christodoulides referred the matter to competent authorities for investigation.

Debate over the body’s future role

Keravnos said he would have no problem if it is decided to change how the body operates but expressed reservations about Akel leader Stefanos Stefanou’s suggestion to transfer its responsibilities to the state scholarships foundation. He said the scholarships foundation has a different role, providing scholarships to excellent students, while the social support body aims to support students mainly facing financial problems.

Call for discussion

Keravnos said the issue should be discussed and weighed to determine the best possible outcome for the children the body is intended to support.

What changes, if any, do you think should be made to how the social support body operates?
