Kyperounta Sanatorium commemorated as minister honors tuberculosis patients in Cyprus

Kyperounta, Cyprus. Health Minister Neophytos Charalambides attended a commemorative ceremony on Sunday honoring tuberculosis patients who were treated and died at the Kyperounta Sanatorium. He highlighted the facility’s historical role and current contribution to health services.

Sanatorium’s evolution into Troodos Hospital

Speaking at the memorial service, Charalambides described how the institution initially served tuberculosis patients before expanding to other patient groups. After 1974, it was transformed into a Regional Hospital, and today it operates as Troodos Hospital following renovation and upgrades, continuing to provide health services.

Focus on tuberculosis prevention and treatment

Charalambides emphasized the tuberculosis clinic as reflecting the government’s commitment to prevention, early diagnosis, and effective treatment. He said Cyprus ranks among countries with a low incidence of tuberculosis due to targeted public health policies, timely diagnosis, and systematic therapeutic approaches.

Preserving memory amid stigma and exclusion

The minister said preserving the site is both historical restoration and a tribute to those who endured the disease under conditions of social exclusion. He noted the stigma and fear that historically shaped societal attitudes toward tuberculosis in Cyprus and internationally, while describing the sanatorium as a place of care, healing, and hope.

Burials and a dedicated cemetery near the facility

Charalambides referred to the early 1940s, when fear and social prejudice prevented burials in nearby community cemeteries and families were often reluctant to take responsibility for interment. A dedicated burial site was established near the sanatorium, where many graves remained anonymous, including that of a young boy named “Titos,” who died in August 1947 at the age of three.

Memorial message and public health commitment

The memorial underscored the historical importance of the Kyperounta Sanatorium, the duty to preserve the memory of those affected by tuberculosis, and the state’s commitment to protecting public health.
