Larnaca, Cyprus. Authorities in Larnaca have agreed on measures including CCTV installation, increased police patrols and private security guards to address vandalism across the city.
Meeting and concerns
The measures were agreed at a meeting on Tuesday involving Larnaca Mayor Andreas Vyras, representatives of the Larnaca tourism board and police officers.
The meeting followed recent vandalism at the Mediterranean Artists’ Park, which displays sculptures by local artists and is due to receive two additional works.
Planned measures
Participants described vandalism as a long-standing issue, including damage to public property, street furniture such as benches and graffiti.
They said the damage results in significant repair costs, affects the city’s cultural identity and undermines its image as a safe and attractive tourist destination.
The agreed measures include installing CCTV systems at the Mediterranean Artists’ Park and other cultural and tourism sites, hiring private security guards to monitor vulnerable areas and increasing police patrols.
