Larnaca, Cyprus. The Larnaca Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Evel) expressed unanimous support for separating the city’s port and marina, endorsing plans to develop a modern, commercial, multifunctional and flexible port.
Support for separation and ownership transfer
The chamber said it does not object to the transfer of ownership of the port and marina to the Cyprus Ports Authority, while emphasising the importance of effective management.
Geography and proximity cited as advantages
In its announcement, the chamber said Larnaca’s geographical position, combined with proximity to the airport and the urban centre, creates particularly favourable conditions for the development of an integrated coastal complex.
The chamber said such a complex can combine port activities, commercial uses, tourism services and supporting infrastructure, contributing substantially to economic and cultural development.
Strategic importance for Larnaca and Cyprus
The chamber described the upgrade and utilisation of existing port and marina infrastructure as a project of strategic importance for the sustainable development of Larnaca and for strengthening Cyprus’ position in shipping and maritime tourism in the eastern Mediterranean.
Marina upgrades and development opportunities
Regarding the marina, the chamber said it currently hosts leisure vessels and provides basic mooring services but requires significant upgrades. It said the existing infrastructure needs to be significantly upgraded to serve a larger number of vessels and visitors at a European level and with safety.
The chamber also pointed to the limited use of coastal areas for tourism and commercial purposes, which it said creates substantial opportunities for further development.
Outlined vision for port and marina
The chamber’s vision includes upgrading port infrastructure, creating a modern passenger and tourism terminal, and expanding commercial activity, alongside enhancing leisure and tourism offerings at the marina.
