Larnaca, Cyprus. Larnaca district governor Angelos Hadjicharalambous said the water development department had not implemented adequate plans to address water scarcity in the district and called on residents to cooperate in managing supply this summer.
Criticism of planning and outlook for 2026
Hadjicharalambous said there had been no proper planning by the water development department, requiring improved management to ensure water reaches consumers’ homes during the summer. He said the agriculture ministry informed regional district authority (EOA) presidents at a recent meeting that water resources allocated in 2026 would be 10 per cent lower than the previous year.
Measures to reduce losses and consumption
He said the situation remained difficult and stressed collective action to secure sufficient supply in the summer months. Hadjicharalambous said the EOA had prepared measures including intensified detection of water leaks and immediate repairs, replacement of infrastructure in critical areas, and cutting off water supplies to parks and green spaces.
Nozzles and public awareness campaign
He said efforts to reduce water losses would be stepped up and that consumers would receive special nozzles for taps in collaboration with the water development department. He added that the agriculture ministry would launch an information campaign to raise awareness and encourage water saving.
Goal to avoid cuts and impact on agriculture
Hadjicharalambous said cooperation from residents could help save 10 per cent of water in Larnaca district and avoid supply cuts in the coming months. He warned that shortages would primarily affect the agriculture sector and said water scarcity would create serious problems for farmers.
