Larnaca, Cyprus. The Larnaca district local government organisation (EOA) said it is unlikely to proceed with water cuts during the summer months, citing measures taken to manage supply and reduce consumption.
Outlook for summer supply
EOA president Angelos Hadjicharalambous said the city and district of Larnaca are optimistic that water cuts will be avoided this summer due to the measures implemented.
He urged residents to develop a water-conscious culture by conserving water, avoiding overconsumption and reducing waste. He said residents should support the organisation’s efforts, adding that even if interruptions are avoided this year, supply cuts may be necessary next year if problems arise.
Smart meter rollout
Hadjicharalambous said 27,500 smart meters are expected to be installed by June. He said the meters aim to improve service quality by allowing consumers to receive immediate notifications through a digital platform about unusually high water consumption at homes and properties.
He said the initiative is part of broader efforts to reduce water consumption and help residents save money.
Network replacements and tenders
Hadjicharalambous said mass replacements of water supplies have been carried out in Kiti and Athienou. He added that a three million euro tender has been announced to replace the entire water supply network in Oroklini, which he said is outdated and frequently experiences problems.
Water-saving nozzles
He said the water development department has launched another tender for water-saving nozzles, which will be distributed to consumers, though the process has been delayed and no implementation date has been set.
He said the devices would reduce water pressure reaching household taps, helping prevent overconsumption and waste, and urged residents to install the nozzles once available.
