Larnaca signs construction contract to begin Ayios Ioannis urban regeneration project

Larnaca, Cyprus. A major urban regeneration project in the historic area of Ayios Ioannis has entered the implementation phase after a construction contract was signed on Monday. The municipality said the project aims to enhance the historic core by improving public spaces.

Scope of works

The municipality said the works will fully upgrade the area, including reconstruction of the road network, widening of pavements and undergrounding of utilities. The plan also includes improved street lighting, new urban furniture, more trees, redesigned traffic flow and updated road markings.

Transport and public space changes

Bus routes will be reorganised, and new parking areas and public squares will be created. A key aspect of the project is the pedestrianisation of the Ayios Ioannis area and the merging of public squares to enhance pedestrian movement.

Heritage and accessibility focus

The area includes cultural and historical landmarks such as the Church of Ayios Ioannis and Tuzla Mosque. The design emphasises sustainable mobility, prioritising pedestrians, cyclists and people with disabilities, with the stated aim of creating a safer and more accessible urban environment.

Mayor’s statement

Larnaca Mayor Andreas Vyras said the project reflects a vision for a city that respects its history and invests in neighbourhoods.

How do you think the planned pedestrianisation and transport changes will affect movement in Ayios Ioannis?
