Lebanese national held in Cyprus as Germany seeks extradition on terrorism charges

Larnaca, Cyprus. A 25-year-old Lebanese national arrested in Cyprus on terrorism charges under a European arrest warrant issued by German authorities remains in custody as Germany’s extradition request is pending.

Custody and extradition timeline

A police representative told the Cyprus Mail the extradition process is expected to take between one and two months. The case is to be examined by the Cypriot judiciary before any extradition is finalised.

Court appearance and reported affiliation

The man is expected to appear in court on Friday. Reuters reported on Tuesday that he is a member of Palestinian insurgent group Hamas, though the Cyprus Mail said it was unable to verify those reports.

Arrest at Larnaca airport

Police said the man arrived at Larnaca airport on Friday on an inbound flight from Beirut and held a ticket for a subsequent outbound flight to what police described as “another European country”.

What do you think the Cypriot judiciary will consider when reviewing the extradition request?
