Limassol awaits council approval on changes to bollards and pedestrian crossings

Limassol, Cyprus. A proposal agreed between the Public Works Department and Limassol municipality would remove selected pedestrian crossing and bollard measures and replace them with alternative road safety interventions, Transport Minister Alexis Vafeades said on Tuesday.

The proposed changes are awaiting approval by the Limassol municipal council before implementation can begin.

Proposed revisions

Vafeades said discussions between the Public Works Department and the municipality had produced “golden ratios” aimed at addressing concerns over the measures introduced under the city’s sustainable urban mobility plan.

Senior engineers inspected the affected areas before developing possible solutions, he said.

The minister said the objective was to balance road safety requirements with concerns raised by residents and businesses affected by the changes.

“At the moment we are awaiting the approval of the city council to what the department has responded to,” Vafeades said.

“Once we have that, the projects will be implemented and there will be changes.”

Concerns over bollards

The controversy began after plastic bollards were installed on roads across Limassol to separate cycle lanes from vehicle traffic under the sustainable urban mobility plan.

Residents and motorists raised concerns about accessibility, road layouts and the impact of the measures on daily movement.

The issue drew further attention after footage circulated showing a driver removing several bollards from Thekla Lysioti Street.
