Limassol, Cyprus. A 29-year-old motorcyclist was arrested in Limassol after allegedly injuring a police officer during a traffic stop and leading officers on a brief pursuit early Tuesday morning.
Traffic stop and pursuit
Police said the incident occurred at around 1.00 am as four members of the Limassol traffic police were conducting checks near the old port. Officers signalled the rider to stop, but he failed to comply, struck a police officer, and fled the scene.
Police said the rider was pursued and continued driving dangerously, violating red traffic lights along Franklin Roosevelt Avenue. The pursuit ended near the new port, where the motorcyclist collided with a police motorcycle and was brought to a stop.
Arrest and alcohol test
Police said the suspect resisted and assaulted the officer during his arrest. Subsequent tests identified the rider as a 29-year-old man who tested positive for alcohol, with a final breathalyser reading of 14 micrograms, above the permitted limit of 9 micrograms.
Officer injured
The injured police officer was transported by ambulance to Limassol general hospital, where doctors diagnosed a sprained elbow and multiple abrasions.
Investigation ongoing
Limassol traffic police said investigations into the incident are continuing.
