Limassol post-carnival cleanup gathers over 500 City Friends Club volunteers

Limassol, Cyprus. Following the Limassol Grand Parade, City Friends Club led a post-carnival cleanup along Arch. Makariou III Avenue, mobilising hundreds of volunteers to support more eco-responsible celebrations.

Volunteer effort and waste sorting

Working with municipal services, more than 500 City Friends Club volunteers collected specific types of recyclable waste during the cleanup, including PMD (plastics, metals, and drink cartons) and sprays. The materials were sorted before municipal services fully cleared the streets for reopening.

Growth compared with last year

The organisation said participation increased from 50 volunteers last year to more than 500 this year.

Amounts collected and disposal

Municipal services removed 50 tonnes of waste in total, while volunteers collected an additional 8.5 tonnes of recyclable materials, including 7 tonnes of sprays, in three hours. The sorted waste was transported to state-licensed organisations for recycling facilities abroad rather than local landfills.

Statements and acknowledgements

“This year’s cleanup demonstrates the real impact volunteers can make,” said Anna Gubareva, founder of City Friends Club. She said it was the largest cleanup in the group’s four-year history and noted efforts to redirect waste from landfill to recycling.

City Friends Club thanked the Limassol municipality for cooperation and support, as well as volunteers for their participation. The organisation also thanked supporting partner Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement (BSM), stating its contribution made the initiative possible.

How do you think large public events in Limassol can further reduce waste and increase recycling?
