Maintenance and restoration tenders announced for Church of Panayia Melendrina

Ayios Amvrosios, Cyprus. Maintenance works are underway at the Church of Panayia Melendrina, with tenders announced for further restoration to preserve the 14th century structure. The church is in the village of Ayios Amvrosios, east of Kyrenia.

Maintenance and tender process

Technical Committee for Cultural Heritage (TCCH) co-chairman Sotos Ktoris said on Tuesday the project follows earlier works carried out in 2014 to prevent structural collapse. He said tenders have been issued to safeguard the remaining parts of the monastic complex, of which only the church structure survives today.

Project funding and supervision

The project is co-financed by the EU and will be implemented under the supervision of the United Nations Development Programme Cyprus (UNDP).

Historical background

The Church of Panayia Melendrina was used as a monastery until 1940 and continued as a place of worship until it was abandoned and desecrated following the Turkish invasion of 1974.
