Man arrested after knife attack on Greek-American tourists near Acropolis

Athens, Greece. A 60-year-old man was arrested on Tuesday after attacking two Greek-American tourists with a knife near the Acropolis archaeological site, police said. The victims, aged 73 and 78, received medical assistance and sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

Police investigation

A police official said the suspect had previously been hospitalised for mental health reasons and had a criminal record. He had also been arrested in the past for possessing a knife.

Witness account

“We just heard people screaming and a crowd running away, so we obviously took cover,” said Tracey Dewey, a visitor from Cape Town, South Africa.

Tourism season

The incident occurred during Greece’s first heatwave of the summer, as the country enters its main tourism season.
