Man dies after restraint on Jet2 flight from Larnaca to Manchester

Manchester, United Kingdom. A 35-year-old man died after being restrained aboard a Jet2 flight from Larnaca to Manchester following an alleged assault on a fellow passenger and a cabin crew member, according to the BBC. Greater Manchester Police officers boarded the aircraft after it arrived at Manchester Airport in the early hours of Monday and found him unresponsive.

Incident on arrival

The man, identified by the BBC as Callum Kerr, 35, from Warrington, had been restrained by passengers and aircrew before police boarded the plane. Officers performed CPR before he was taken to hospital, where he died the following day.

Investigation launched

The Independent Office for Police Conduct is investigating the actions of the five officers who boarded the plane after Greater Manchester Police made a mandatory referral because of police contact with Kerr before his death.

The IOPC said the officers were being treated as witnesses rather than suspects. A separate Greater Manchester Police investigation is examining the conduct of members of the public involved.

Evidence under review

Body-worn camera footage and officer statements are among the evidence being reviewed, the BBC reported.

Family statement

Kerr’s family described him as a devoted father of three and said he had a passion for sport, according to the BBC.
