Metsola says EU is “in the best hands” as Cyprus begins Council of the EU presidency

Strasbourg, France. European Parliament President Roberta Metsola said on Tuesday that Europe is “in the best hands” as Cyprus begins its rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union. She spoke alongside Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides at a joint press conference.

EU priorities during Cyprus’ six-month term

Metsola said Cyprus’ six-month term comes “at a time when Europe is being tested in terms of security, geopolitical issues, and competitiveness”. She added that “if there is one conclusion we can draw from today’s session … it is that Europe must respond with clarity and determination”.

Competitiveness and reducing bureaucracy

Metsola said one of the EU’s key priorities in the coming months will be competitiveness, and that the European Parliament will “continue to act in favour of simplification” and “reducing bureaucracy” so that “it is easier for our businesses to be successful”. She said this includes looking outwards for new trade opportunities and strengthening the single market through better cross-border integration and less market fragmentation, adding that Cyprus will be “a trusted partner” in this effort.

Defence, Ukraine and Greenland

On defence, Metsola said the EU will “continue to increase Europe’s readiness and spending as we adapt to new realities” and will “remain steadfast in supporting Ukraine”. She added that “we have done a lot, but we must continue to move forward with efficiency”.

Metsola also addressed Greenland, saying the EU will do everything it can to de-escalate the situation, find solutions, and strengthen the transatlantic relationship. She referred to remarks by United States House speaker Mike Johnson in London earlier in the day and said she echoed his sentiment that Western countries face challenges best addressed together, while stressing that “any way forward must respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Greenland and Denmark”.

What do you think should be the EU’s top priority during Cyprus’ Council presidency?
