My Grandmother Kyriakou returns to Nicosia stage with documentary-theatre tribute to Kyriakou Pelagia

Nicosia, Cyprus. The documentary-theatre performance My Grandmother Kyriakou will return to the Nicosia Municipal Theatre on March 18 and 19 after its 2025 premiere. The production blends theatre, live music and archival material to portray the life of iconic Cypriot singer Kyriakou Pelagia.

Story told through family perspective and archives

The performance is presented through the eyes of Pelagia’s granddaughter, Irene Pelagia, and incorporates old archives and a live interview. It traces Pelagia’s rise to fame, her village life, her marriage, her quick-witted tsiattista, and the impact of her music on Cypriot tradition.

Production details and creative team

The show is a co-production of the 2025 Nicosia International Festival and the Municipality of Paralimni. Irene Pelagia serves as the musical director, with text written by Andreas Nicolaides and direction by Kleitos Kleitou.

Format and organisers’ remarks

The production combines visual effects, live recording, archival interviews, live theatre and music, and an interview with Irene. Organisers said Kyriakou’s life is presented not as a conventional biography but as a collective memory, highlighting that she began writing and singing traditional music later in life at the age of 60.

My Grandmother Kyriakou will be staged on March 18 and 19 at the Nicosia Municipal Theatre in Nicosia at 8.30pm. The performance is in Greek. More information is available at https://www.more.com/cy-en/tickets/theater/i-giagia-mou-i-kyriakou
