My Journey Through Your Memories exhibition presents collected queer stories in Nicosia

Nicosia, Cyprus. A research project collecting queer stories and memories from Cyprus will be presented this weekend as an exhibition titled My Journey Through Your Memories. The exhibition is part of the ongoing project Collecting Queer Memories from Cyprus and will run at Koraï Space from Friday to Monday.

Project and exhibition

The exhibition brings together personal stories from queer individuals living on the island through objects that carry those stories, presenting findings collected so far. Initiated in February 2025 by Italian art historian and independent researcher Alessandro Cazzola, the project invites participants to select one tangible testimony tied to an episode significant in the formation of their non-normative and/or non-conforming identities.

Method and contributions

Through one-on-one conversations and private moments of sharing, participants were encouraged to accompany their chosen object with a text in any language, length or form to situate and contextualise the memory. The textual contributions reflect participants’ processes of revisiting and reinterpreting past experiences in light of who they are today.

Collected testimonies and context

To date, 20 contributions, each comprising an object and a text, have been collected and will be presented publicly. The memories, rooted in Cyprus, were shared in cafés, homes, pubs, art spaces, and in the street, with some capturing precise moments and others spanning longer periods.

Aim and wider significance

The project presents the collected memories as fragments of a larger mosaic of Cyprus’ recent queer history, which it describes as largely unexplored, not institutionalised or historicised, and at risk of losing traces over time. The initiative aims to preserve testimonies by making them visible and entrusting them to collective memory, while encouraging the sharing and safeguarding of additional stories that remain out of public view, and contributing to cohesion within queer communities in Cyprus through a platform for sharing, empowerment, care and remembrance.

Event details

The exhibition is scheduled for March 27-30 at Koraï Space, Nicosia. Opening night is 6pm-9pm, with a guided tour at 5pm, and opening hours listed as daily from 3pm-7pm. More information is available at www.koraispace.com and [email protected].
