National Blood Strategy presented in Nicosia to reform Cyprus blood services

Nicosia, Cyprus. Cyprus presented its National Blood Strategy in Nicosia on Saturday as a tool to reform blood services, Health Minister Neophytos Charalambides said at a workshop marking World Voluntary Blood Donor Day. He said the strategy is aimed at strengthening patient safety, blood adequacy and quality, and the protection of donors and recipients while building a resilient system.

Strategy priorities

Charalambides said the strategy focuses on patient safety, blood adequacy and quality, and the protection of donors and recipients. He said it is intended to help build a more resilient blood service system.

Voluntary donation tradition

The minister highlighted Cyprus’ tradition of voluntary blood donation and thanked donors for their contribution.

Transfusion needs

He said the state faces significant transfusion demands, noting that Cyprus has one of the largest populations of people with thalassemia internationally, alongside cases of sickle cell disease and other chronic conditions that require regular transfusion support for quality of life.

Implementation measures

Charalambides said improved monitoring of blood stocks, better coordination between services, and the use of modern technology will support implementation of the strategy.

Cooperation and next steps

He said the strategy’s success requires cooperation between the ministry, blood banks, professionals, patient groups, and volunteers. The ministry will study the strategy and proceed with implementation guided by patient needs and scientific evidence.
