National Council to review President Christodoulides’ Brussels meetings

Nicosia, Cyprus. The National Council is convening on Monday to review President Nikos Christodoulides’ recent trip to Brussels. Government spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis said the President is expected to brief members on the outcomes of his meetings held on the sidelines of the European Council last week.

Briefing on Brussels meetings

Letymbiotis said Christodoulides will inform Council members about the results of discussions and contacts made during the visit.

Meetings with international and EU leaders

During the trip, Christodoulides met UN secretary-general Antonio Guterres and European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen.

Tripartite social summit focus

Christodoulides also participated in the tripartite social summit held last Wednesday, where the main topic was investments in the European economy. Discussions included closing EU investment gaps, reducing strategic dependencies amid developments particularly in the Middle East, and transitioning to clean and renewable energy sources to increase the EU’s energy independence.

Comments on European strategic autonomy

Christodoulides said Cyprus had demonstrated in practice that achieving European strategic autonomy was possible and described the response from EU member states amid mounting regional tensions as unprecedented. He said, “Cyprus has proved in practice that European autonomy is both feasible and real,” citing recent security cooperation with European partners following a drone incident on the island.

What outcomes from the Brussels meetings will the National Council focus on most closely?
