Naval Children’s Charity warns of rising family concerns as HMS Dragon deploys to eastern Mediterranean

Portsmouth, United Kingdom. Concerns are rising for the families of Royal Navy personnel deployed to conflict zones in the Middle East, according to the head of a charitable organization. HMS Dragon sailed from Portsmouth on Tuesday afternoon with 200 crew members on board, heading towards the eastern Mediterranean.

Deployment and operational role

The deployment is part of the Navy’s ongoing operational readiness exercises. HMS Dragon will join UK defense operations in the Cyprus region, focusing on the protection of the Akrotiri airbase, which was attacked by an Iranian-made drone earlier this month.

Charity concerns and advice for families

Claire Shearer, Chief Executive of the Naval Children’s Charity, said military missions, particularly in conflict zones, are challenging for families and that the current situation intensifies those challenges. She said the charity is particularly concerned for children who may require stability and normalcy during difficult periods.

“There’s always a level of concern. Our Navy is excellent, and its personnel are trained for such missions,” Shearer said.

The charity supports children up to 25 years old whose parents or guardians serve or have served in the Royal Navy. Shearer urged parents to communicate openly with their children about the war in an age-appropriate manner, saying that withholding information could increase anxiety.

Shearer also advised caution regarding children’s use of social media amid concerns they could be exposed to misinformation related to the Middle East conflict.

Government position and criticism

The UK government has not joined the US and Israel in offensive operations against Iran, but has allowed the US to use British airbases for what it described as “defensive strikes” against Iranian missiles and launch sites. The government has faced criticism for not reacting swiftly enough to the crisis in the Middle East.

The UK government said it has deployed military assets to the region since January and has sent additional forces following the onset of the conflict.

Families gather to see ship depart

As HMS Dragon left Portsmouth, hundreds of people gathered to watch the ship’s departure. Helen Barton, who traveled from Nottingham to bid farewell to her son Henry on his first deployment, said she planned to shout as the ship passed by because the family was proud of him.
