Paris, France. Nestlé has expanded its infant formula recall to include an additional batch of Guigoz after France lowered its maximum threshold for cereulide, a toxin that can cause nausea and vomiting. The move came despite analysts expecting no further recalls from Nestlé or rival Danone.
Recall expansion and revised safety threshold
The Swiss food company announced the withdrawal after France reduced its safety limit for cereulide on Saturday. Nestlé said in its recall alert that evolving methods for analysing cereulide led it to voluntarily recall an additional batch of Guigoz infant formula on top of those already withdrawn.
Contamination linked to Chinese ingredients supplier
Cereulide has been detected in ingredients from a factory in China supplying multiple infant formula manufacturers, including Nestlé, Danone and Lactalis. The issue has prompted recalls in dozens of countries and raised concerns among parents.
Analyst expectations and wider industry impact
Analysts at Barclays and Jefferies said on Monday they expected no further recalls from Nestlé or Danone. France’s updated threshold was intended to strengthen protections after recalls expanded to include other companies such as Vitagermine.
Regulatory discussions and EFSA advice
France’s new limit followed a meeting with the EU’s food safety authority, EFSA, which issued similar advice on Monday.
Previous withdrawals and ongoing investigation
Nestlé had already recalled some Guigoz batches, among other brands, in France in January and December. French investigators are examining whether there is a link between the deaths of two infants and recalled Guigoz products, according to local prosecutors.
Health ministry statement
The French health ministry and Nestlé said there was no evidence of a connection at this stage, with results expected in the coming days.
