New Cypriot winery near Skarinou expands production and highlights indigenous grape varieties

Skarinou, Cyprus. Dómes Sergiou winery, located just outside the village of Skarinou, has been operating since 2024 and is preparing to open a new winery facility. The producer is investing in technology and equipment to scale output and refine wine quality.

The winery positions its work as blending tradition with innovation, with a focus on precision in fermentation, ageing and winemaking practices.

Operations, capacity and grape varieties

Current production is 25,000 bottles annually, with investment in advanced equipment supporting potential growth to 100,000 bottles and beyond. The winery works with indigenous varieties Xynisteri, Morokanella and Maratheftiko, alongside Syrah, Assyrtiko and Agiorgitiko.

Winemaking and portfolio

Winemaker Kyriakos Papandreou, who has experience working for two Cypriot wineries, is leading production and aims to present a fresh approach to traditional Cypriot wine for younger drinkers. Dómes, meaning “terrace” in Greek, produces monovarietal wines in Xynisteri and Morokanella, a rosé Maratheftiko, and two blends: a white from Xynisteri and Assyrtiko and a red blending Agiorgitiko and Shiraz.

The 2024 Sergiou Winery Dómes Morokanella, P.G.I. Larnaka (ABV 10.5%), is described as light yellow with floral and fruity aromas including ripe peach, guava, pear, passionfruit, chamomile and honeysuckle. The palate is described as showing tangerine and stone fruit, with briny acidity, medium body, floral tones and a hint of fruit sweetness on the finish, and is priced at €15.

Wine notes: 2025 Dómes Morokanella

The 2025 Sergiou Winery Dómes Morokanella, P.G.I. Larnaka (ABV 12%), is described as differing mainly in alcohol level and showing a light-yellow hue with less intense aromas including peach, apricot, guava and garden herbs. It is described as offering earthy and creamy flavours with neutral acidity, finishing supple and well-rounded with floral and stone fruit flavours.
