New Zealand actor Sam Neill dies at 78

Wellington, New Zealand. Actor Sam Neill died suddenly on Monday at the age of 78 after recovering from cancer, his family said in a statement.

Tributes from political leaders

Prime Minister Christopher Luxon described Neill as “one of the greats” in a social media post, saying the actor helped bring New Zealand stories to global audiences for more than 50 years.

Luxon said Neill’s talent contributed to the development of New Zealand’s film industry into “one of our greatest cultural exports.”

Former Prime Minister Helen Clark called Neill a “legendary NZ actor” who brought pride to the country through his screen roles and international recognition.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said Neill fought illness with dignity, humour and conviction, and would be “much mourned and long remembered.”

Messages from fellow actors

British actor Richard E. Grant described Neill as “an officer and a gentleman in the truest sense,” saying he had guided and helped him through a difficult period in his life.

New Zealand actor Karl Urban also posted a social media comment.
